A bit of romantic fun

So for better or worse I have started to watch kdramas. I am finding them about as addicting as webtoons so this can be considered a warning of sorts.

However, you would be doing yourself a great disservice if you never watch the kdrama “Oh My Ghost”. It is really delightful, funny, and a pretty sweet romance.

It looks like this story had been remade a few times. I found a Thai version that is also on Netflix but honestly I can’t say if it is better or worse than the Korean version. I did find the acting superb in the Korean version. In other kdramas sometimes the acting is a bit overdone, but honestly that is part of the genre. I didn’t find really any of that in this series and if there was it came from the side characters and it really made sense with their character.

These guys were the true stars

So in this story a ghost named Soon-ae is a virgin and is holding a grudge. She has to stay on earth until it is resolved. The answer to her grudge? Well, she has to have sex. The problem? Men can’t handle her negative energy so when she possess a girl to have sex with a guy the guy ends up passing out.

Then she finds Chef… A man loaded with positive energy… (mhmm energy).

She possess Bong-sun a woman who can see ghosts but then she gets stuck in the body sense their energies are to similar. I did find this part of the plot a bit silly since later on it seems likes she could leave whenever she wanted.

So Soon-ae in Bong-sun’s body tries her hardest to seduce the chef. Kind of scaring the guy in the process.

937d0b1c66d775441f954e9ddc02c6a08fd05a82_hq

Everyone around her thinks that she is going crazy from going from the shy quiet Bong-sun to the loud and brash Soon-ae. The guys in the restaurant are pretty funny and adorable in their reactions to her. They didn’t treat her very well at the start but it is funny to see how they act when she starts talking back.

oh my

Soon-ae is now building a relationship with Chef and it is adorable. I just love the Chef’s characters. He is such an awkward sweet character. I really think the actor did a fantastic job of portraying him. I think with this type of guy it could have come off as him being a stuck up jerk. The way that he would deliver the lines “Of course I am. Or I am handsome” came off really well since you could see the insecurities behind the characters. Really such a great acting job.

And there is a bit of eye candy too 😉

Chef is taken? How about this sweetheart?

I don’t really want to give away anything in the show since there are quiet a few plot twists. I did find parts of it truly tragic and it is a sign of a good show that can make you laugh, cry, and go awww.

Another great thing is that is is all wrapped up. No waiting for season two! Another great thing about kdramas!

This moment was my favorite. I about died laughing.

Take some time to watch this little gem. You won’t regret it.

Happy watching!

Spring Roll

It is a theory that if I mention food more people will be likely to click on my post? Did it work? Before I leave again for another conference I thought I would talk about a few of my favorites so far this spring season.

  1. Wotakoi:  Love is Hard for Otaku

I am so happy that I saw some of you posting about this, without your posts I never would have watched or heard of this anime. For me this has been the top show that I’ve been looking forward to each week and I’m so sad when each episode is over.

DarHcr6VAAAVR9u

I love the fact that this is a romance that is out of high school. It is nice to see something with adults. Also the main character is really easy for me to relate to. I know what it is like to hide what I’m interested in so I won’t feel judge. It was a slow process (now that I have anime posters in my classroom the cat is out of the bag… no going back). She reminds me of myself.

maxresdefault-9

When she meets a guy who knows that she is an otaku… It is hard to admit your love for something. Being judge by others is a real fear. I think the more I step out and admit to my weirdness the more free I feel. It took awhile to get to that point.

wotajames.png

This anime has the sweetest romantic moments and the humor so far is laugh out loud hilarious. If you aren’t watching this anime, you really are missing out. So I hope you give this one a shot.

2. Crossing Time episode 3

Okay so my number 2 choice is a single episode. This one is all shorts and the first two have been eh… I’m so happy I stuck around for the third one though. I think it is because I’m a teacher, but this one was cute and funny and if you don’t watch any other episode from this anime take a shot at the third one.

Y0c3Ax62BacEPZs8M4s8fumivrN5rvxmCMtKvOzZ

Although I probably only think it is funny since I’m an awkward adult…

3. Megalobox

After getting a few comedies in I am really liking and totally buying the badass moments that this anime gives me. I am eating it up.

I love the dystopian-like world. I’m liking the character. The music is on point. I’m really hoping this one delivers in the end. I’m all on board with gearless Joe.

Those are my top three so far this year, I’m still watching a lot of the others but I wanted to shout out these three quickly.

Personal Update:

Conference one is done and I’m leaving this afternoon for conference two. I got my rejections last week. They liked what I had but it is not what they are looking for at the moment. So I’m dusting myself off and headed out again.

I just want to say thank you to everyone for your kind words of encouragement while I was gone. Coming back to seeing your reasons why made my heart so full. The rejections didn’t hurt so bad when I saw how I’m surrounded by such wonderful and dedicated people. Thank you for listing your reasons. I’ve felt so uplifted this week and if I need to collect 1000 rejections before I get a yes, I know I have an awesome community in all of you cheering me on.

Thank you and Happy watching :).

Behold the power of the hamster!

One thing about picking anime for my TBW most of them were short… If I would have had a G in my name I might have put Gintama, I’m watching it, but there probably wouldn’t have be a post about it for ten years.

I gave the anime Himouto! Umaru-chan another shot. I started watching it last fall and I didn’t want to watch a spoiled main character for 12 episodes. In the end I watched a spoiled main character for 12 episodes…

img_0207

In honor of watching this anime I decided to destroy my stomach (sorry no cola). My dog Casanova is modeling the food that would be my demise. I hope my food selection would make Umaru proud.

himouto-umaru-chan-gif-5

There are some really interesting things about Umaru I guess you can say- good for her for being honest with herself about her lazy habits. I mean I want to sit and eat chips and watch anime all day. Maybe I didn’t like her as much because I’m jealous of her life style. It is also funny in ways that anime can only be funny. We accept the fact that she shrinks when she gets home turning into a little creature with a hamster hoodie from the beautiful put together image she shows at school.

4b5

I can’t help but feel sorry for her brother, but in the end he does give into her demands so I guess he can be blamed for his own trouble. He is a really kind generous character and she take advantage of it, I think that is what ruined a bit of my enjoyment. Am I taking this comedy too seriously? Probably, but we all have the things that just hit us the wrong why even if they are supposed to be funny.

giphy

In the end I didn’t hate watching it and she did have moments where you could see that she did care for her brother. I think all I wanted was to see her appreciate what he does for her. She did try to help him cook and she even went as far as to agree to eat vegetables that weren’t hidden in her hamburger steak… Now that is progress!

I again do see a bit of myself in her…

images

I mean I do have books to read, but when the internet is down life gets scary…

All in all it was a pretty fun watch. I think it is for different tastes and it has some really cute and funny moments if you can get over the fact of her brother sacrificing everything so she can have what she wants.

Pretty cute huh? And who doesn’t want to snuggle up in a hoodie and roll around?

Looking past an art style

After making a TBW list with my name I decide it was a good time to knock off a couple of anime that I’ve been wanting to watch while waiting for spring season to start. Now I’ve only really heard good things about Mob Psycho 100 and with a season two coming out I thought it was time for me too get past the art style and watch it. First, I want to be clear that I don’t think that art is horrible it just reminds me a bit of Saturday morning cartoons and less anime if that makes sense… I never really got into that type of style, but after giving other shows a chance it was time for me to get over myself and watch this anime.

If you are waiting to watch this anime I really recommend you give it a try. I watched it all in one sitting and the story is very good.

A bit of set up:  This is a world with some people who have powers and the main character Shigeo Kageyama (called mob by his “master”) has very strong powers that let him expel ghosts and spirits. His master who is training him Reigen doesn’t have any powers but pretty much uses Mob so he can claim he is a powerful psychic.

mob1a

When he really doesn’t have a clue… So Mob works for him part time getting paid very little. He doesn’t do anything else. He isn’t popular but he dreams of being together with a pretty girl who he has a crush on.

So the story has Mob getting rid of various things with his power while his master claims to be training him but in reality does nothing.

Talking a bit about Mob, he is the character who doesn’t show much emotion, he learned early on that if he gets to emotional that he ends up hurting people. He has pretty much one rule and that is to not use his powers against people.

91275

In the anime there are some great comment by Mob that are really funny. This particular one was during a torture scene with water and Mob was worried about the bad guy.

While watching you see him refuse time and time again to not use his powers against other, but then that would be boring. Things are always more interesting to see what it takes for a character to break their moral code. Mob will do it for family.

Mob Psycho 100 - 11 - Large 02

A bit of a spoilery information here….

Mob’s brother is jealous of his powers and he wishes he had powers while Mob wishes that he was like his brother. They both think that they got the short straw, but don’t really understand the problems the other faces.

Mob’s brother Ritsu starts a campaign in school to get rid of delinquents. It first has noble intentions of keeping his brother safe, but then him and another council member decide to frame the students. This gives Ritsu a lot of guilt and stress, through this he awakens his own powers and he doesn’t have the same rules as Mob. He starts to attack people and is getting out of control.

Ritsu’s story line is a bit weak, it could have used a little bit more build up and I will be interested to see what happens in the upcoming season two.

In the end they find themselves in a secret organization. Mob is there to rescue his brother from getting brain washed. The goal of the organization is world domination (original huh).

One of the messages that I really liked is that Mob always hits home that he is a normal person. His powers don’t make him special. Without them he is still unpopular, socially awkward, and weak.

original
I relate to how Mob runs on a spiritual level.

He tries to better himself without using his powers. That is a nice message for those who always wish they were like someone else but don’t want to put the work in.

I’ll say one more thing about the art style. It may take awhile to get into it, but the fight scenes…. Whoa… They are good. When Mob gets to 100%…

images

It looks pretty awesome in my opinion.

So if you like anime with unique characters, good moral lessons, and some humor. I would recommend you give this show a chance. I’m a bit sad it took me so long to watch it so you can bet I’m going to watch season two as the episodes come out.

Happy watching!

I keep coming back to you…

Oh boy did I have plans to watch new anime over spring break… So. Many. Plans. Then it happened… It all started with a manga I’ve been following for awhile… Damn you Namaikizakari… Then I fell into the show hole of just watching and reading manga and anime that I have already seen… Why do I keep coming back? I just can’t find their equal…

First the ongoing Manga Namaikizakari….

I have a confession, when it comes to manga I mostly read romance and I’m always looking for that next one, but sometimes I keep rereading the same ones haha! Unfortunately for me Namaikizakari is not finished so by the time I can get my hands on the next chapter I forget what happens then I reread it… It is okay… I really enjoy this manga and the main character is well…tumblr_static_tumblr_static_filename_640Be still my beating heart… haha. I really like how he is drawn. For me I love how the mangaka does the eyes. You don’t see those often in manga and it really adds a nice appeal to how he looks.

Okay I could go on all day and probably lose all my readers haha… He isn’t just a pretty face, he is a growing changing character which I love to see! Starting as someone who doesn’t care and moving to finish goals with a lot of determination. Him and the MC Yuki have great chemistry and I like the flip of the boy being the one interested first.

display1

It is a really sweet manga and the problem with it is that once I read it… I go on the hunt for more manga and I don’t find a lot that I haven’t read yet so I decided to go back to old faithful Skip Beat.

tumblr_mbcfcoHJyv1qkyzwdo1_r10_500

If you haven’t read or watched Skip Beat I hope you give it a chance. The romance is sweet but it is also secondary. The growth and development of the main character is what makes this anime and manga amazing. Kyoko starts of as a clueless girl which frustrated me in the first chapter, but soon the betrayal sends her on an amazing journey to find herself.

tumblr_mstwl71Byo1rtx37oo1_500

She has to deal with her inner demons (literally haha) from being throw out like trash. It is what motivates her at first, but you will love the path that it takes her on. She truly starts to find her own way and what she wants with life. The main factor is that she doesn’t find it in another guy… Whaaaaat!? ha! She realizes that she is strong and starts to see that she has her own talents. The anime stops about one forth of the way through and then manga is still… ongoing! So I don’t know the end of her journey yet, but I keep rereading and if you have a manga that is like Skip Beat please let me know! I love the side romance and the awesome strong main character. It is funny it is sweet and it leaves me wanting more!

Skip-Beat-skip-beat-32445763-500-281

So after spending time trying to find another manga that is as good or similar to Skip Beat I once again just fell into another old faithful… Maid Sama.

tumblr_m4c08k7wZ91rvfwwno1_500

This anime and manga trap me every time. Two strong main characters. Yes, there is a point where you can be frustrated with Misaki and her cluelessness but she isn’t a weak character she wants to get things done on her own and no one fights her battles for her. There are sweet moments where Usui helps her out but in the end she isn’t helpless.

tenor

I’m a fan of the mixture of comedy and romance. It makes it fun to watch to you aren’t just frustrated by constant miscommunication like most shojo manga and anime. It has great backstory and the characters overcoming their past with help from each other. The manga is finished! yay! The anime is only part of it though.

So dear readers, I have watched nothing new. I’m in the middle of the Maid Sama re-watch and I’m loving it.

Are there any good romances out there that you like? What about manga? Let me know!

Happy watching!

Why am I alone?

Thanks to a wonderful review by Irina on her blog I watched the hilarious anime Watamote yesterday. Now, I guess the title can be confused with the term hilarious. This anime has wonderful notes of humor that directly relate to social anxiety and just the plain awkwardness of puberty. However, there are some pointed notes of the characters loneliness and confusion on why people don’t like her even though the audience may understand, the mc believes in her unique charms.

I took a lot of screenshots while I watched. I noticed after I finished with the last episode the moments I picked were mostly focused on the quiet times in the anime. The times where she began to doubt her wonderfulness and felt the keen loneliness of not having friends around her. It is easy to see myself in this character when I grew up I had a small handful of friends (who I am very thankful for) but there was always that need to feel “popular” to be the one that everybody liked since I believed myself to be a good person. I think I was lucky in the fact that I wasn’t a target for bullies. The only time I was was bullied was by people who didn’t even go to my school. (That is a story for a different day). This character isn’t bullied she isn’t made fun of she is just merely left alone.

In a way that can be just as saddening as being picked on. It is like she doesn’t exist to her classmates. I honestly really like the fact that she isn’t bullied and the classmates are not seen as the villain. In a matter of speaking the main character is the one who gets in her own way half the time. She comes up with these crazy plots to make people or boys notice her and they backfire in strange ways. Half the time she can’t even talk which over the course of the anime shows how crippling her social anxiety really is and you watch and you just want her to “SAY SOMETHING!” But she can’t it isn’t something you can just get over.

Time and time again she tries to get people to realize how wonderful she is but in the end she goes back to her room and plays otome games. That is the only way she can have that human and sexual interaction that she desires.

Also there are so many references to anime and otome games it is pretty fun to see if you can spot them all. Being and English Literature major I enjoyed this one a whole bunch.

There are some golden humorous moments with her parents during these times of her sexual awakening. One with her father that involved a personal massager and a BL otome game and one with a recording and her mother.

Kudos to the parents for just acting normal. I think that is a great moment of showing those lovely years where our parents don’t understand us, but then they still love us. The way the creators us the pauses for humor is on point and it gives laughter to a lot of moments that could be considered very sad. I think this is an anime that does very well with dealing with the tragic things of being lonely but adding in humor. In my mind it doesn’t make fun of her, but I think if it just focused on her loneliness it would be a very hard anime to watch.

These two image are from one of the moments that really begin to show her isolation. She wants to form a club and be with people in the first image it shows this dream happening. There are two other students who joined her club and they are having a peaceful moment just being together. Then after the song is over you see that she was having tea with her two stuffed toys all along. The club was never formed and she is still alone.

The sadness from her isolation shows up more and more towards the end of the anime. Now when I watched I really wanted for her to find that awkward friend that she could be with but I don’t think that this will be that kind of anime.

Given a choice she will always choose to be on her own. She finds these safe places where she feels at home and clings to them. It is hard for her to talk and meet new people. So when we see the funny. Moments of this anime we also get those moments that we can relate to as an introvert or a person with social anxiety. Some will never understand why we can just go and “make friends” it is never that easy. When we do step out of our comfort zone we have one thought in our minds…

I hope to see a season two for this anime. I hope to see some of her growth and still have the humor shine through. This was a great balance and if you had those awkward teenage years this will be very relatable… maybe more so for women, but I think most will enjoy this anime.

Sometimes I think that while we live and grow we have a habit of hoping that things will just happen to us. That change will be easy. We need to go out and do things ourselves and build those relationships with those close to us instead of hoping to be popular.

I wanted to end this post with a challenge. The way the mc is alone all the time really spoke to my heart. I know what it is like then and now to sit, eat, and be alone. It isn’t easy. So maybe this week if you see someone who is alone say hello, smile at them, maybe sit next to them if you know them. I’m not saying go forth and harass people, but there are those out there who go days without any meaningful human interaction. In this anime for a long time the only person who talked the the mc was the teacher who said goodbye to her at the end of the day. That moment meant something to her and trust me… coming from someone who is alone a lot… A hello can mean the world to someone. I’m going to do my best this week and I hope you all will reach out too.

Happy watching!

Why did I like MMO Junkie so much?

I had a short post on MMO Junkie about halfway through the short season and I found myself enjoying it so much that I declared it was my favorite (new) show this fall. Now that the season is wrapped up I want to reflect a bit on why I liked it so much.

tumblr_oxzhd664se1wzl06zo2_540

First, lets take an honest look at why this show wouldn’t be consider special by some standards. Did I like this show just because it was a break from all the killing anime this fall? Was I just in need of a fresh romance? You can look at the premise and some say “oh nice a female NEET we don’t get that very often,” but then it is still a slow moving romance where you are just like, “Come on! Just kiss her already! Tell him/her how you feel!” I can sense the frustration at the ending. Okay, they are going on a “date” is that all we really get? Yeah, I myself wished for a bit more from the end, but then if we get those romantic moments it would have destroyed the show. Let me explain…

Morioka seems to be suffering from social anxiety (let me play doctor here, sorry if I’m way off, Theatre major here, haha) and a bit of OCD (she cleans her rug with a lint roller every time she feels a bit anxious). If their relationship at that point would have went beyond the hand holding it would have been like “Oh yeah, I’m cured, you too can get rid of anxiety too my fellow NEETs!” No. It doesn’t work like that. This anime is special because the characters are true to how they were created. It can be painful to watch but that is what makes it so good if you give it a chance. An honest look at how people have miscommunication and are worried about everything in relationships. From getting that first response to your message to having someone text you something and you misread the tone.

Moriko needed the time to feel safe with Lily before she could let Sakurai in her life.

She has so much self doubt and the MMO game in a way saved her. When I watched the first episode again I realized that she came in on the last day of her job. I didn’t notice this small detail and it really put the whole timeline into perspective when she started the new MMO game. Just in the brief flashbacks of her at her work place you could feel her tension and and stress. The anime just touched a bit on this and I really really wish that we would have seen a bit more of this to flesh out her choice to become a NEET. I think that would have given a lot of watchers some closure on her backstory. However, we only got 10 episodes so they probably had a lot to squeeze in and the slow burning romance would have been lost.

The truest moment for me as a female was in the episode where Morioka went to get food with Sakurai and jumped to the conclusionnetjuu_02-1 that the female emploie thought that they didn’t belong together since Sakurai is so good looking. This is a theme throughout the anime since they met. She thinks she doesn’t deserve to be with someone handsome or so kind. She thinks she is useless since she is a NEET.  She is ashamed that the loves MMO games. She doesn’t understand why she is like this.

How many times do people put themselves down in life because we think we are imposters? That we don’t belong somewhere? A lot of us like anime, and I see often that we are judged just on that aspect in our life by those who don’t like anime or understand it. It is hard to go through the world and not think that people are judging us and sometimes get to the point where we don’t care about what others think. That takes some time and courage. Morioka is just getting to the start of her journey at the end of the season.

I do think this anime was a nice break from the killing anime this fall and from some of the really confusing anime also. Maybe that is part of what made it stand out so much for me. In a world of high school romance anime this one does stand out. It has a very honest look into problems that adults face when things at work can get to be too much and there is only the “suck it up” option. A nice side plot that you can find a family of oddballs online and they can turn into true friends. Sometimes us weirdos just need to find each other and thankfully the internet with blogs and MMO games lets us do that.

5a5efe06d9071dc8f1363f5c2fdf67b8

I guess in the end I like this so much because I can just honestly relate to Morioka. I see myself in her and like her I keep pushing forward and I hope you do too.

I’ll get off my soap box and just mention that since I started this blog I’ve enjoyed reading and interacting with all you dear followers! Thank you for following me and thank you for reading. I do have my book deadline at the end of this month so I hope to be able to keep up the posts! Happy watching!
